How to Design a Main Bathroom For Your Family

When renovating the main bathroom, you can still have a modern look while finding functional space for your family.

Whether you’ve just moved into a new home or you’re looking to remodel your main bathroom to make it more family-friendly, there are several things you’ll want to consider before you take on the project. Designing a family-friendly bathroom isn’t as simple as it seems. Some think it means you need to put high-design on the back burner.

That’s because functionality needs to take precedence when designing a bathroom that everyone in your family can utilize. For instance, you may need to include a traditional bathtub instead of a fancy jacuzzi-style tub or standup shower. This helps to accommodate younger kids. However, are there some other things you should consider? Here are four tips to get you started.

4 Considerations to Keep in Mind When Designing Your Main Bathroom

When it comes time to begin your main bathroom design and remodeling project, you’ll want to keep these four things in mind:

1. Set Your Budget

Set your budget in stone. Most homeowners make the mistake of setting a budget and then not sticking to it. Once it comes time to shopping for necessary materials and any other appliances the budget goes out the window. This is how your project can get completely out of hand without you knowing until the very end. So once your budget is set, make sure you do not deviate from it. This requires careful planning and plenty of research into the cost of materials and appliances.

2. Remember Function over Aesthetics

When designing a master bathroom for yourself and/or your partner, it’s easy to let your design ideas wander about. However, when you’re designing the main bath for the entire family to use, you need to keep in mind that function trumps aesthetics every time.

Now, that’s not to say you have to choose things you don’t like. It just means that you need to consider the needs of everyone who will be using it. For instance, while a bowl sink that sits atop your vanity may be a beautiful piece of artwork, it’s not practical for a small child to use. Not only can they not reach the faucets, but they would also have to reach awkwardly to try and get anything accomplished, such as washing their hands or brushing their teeth.

3. Textured Materials are Your Friend

While you may be tempted to choose sleek, smooth surfaces throughout your main bathroom design, you’ll want to reconsider if this is a room that your small children will be using. Those smooth, sleek surfaces can quickly become slip hazards once they become wet, whereas textured surfaces give little hands and feet something to grip onto – wet or dry.

4. Consider Low-Maintenance or High Durability

If you’re considering raising a family or already in the process of it, you’ll want to consider the maintenance of the materials you pick. Think about it, kids and even teenagers can be quite a bit to handle, and accidents inevitably happen – whether it be a chip in the vanity or a broken tile from dropping something on the floor. Lower-maintenance materials can save you quite a bit, not only initially but in the case that you may need to replace something later on down the line.

That being said, some materials that are more durable might be worth the investment now to not have to replace later.
