5 Awesome DIY Decorations for the Holidays

The holidays are a time of year for spreading joy for all to hear. And, what better way to do that than with some DIY decorations for both inside and outside of your home? When most think DIY decorations for the holidays, they think small scale, which is fine. However, why not take things up a step with these five awesome DIY decoration ideas?

1. Holiday Tree Light Up Marquee Sign

Signs made with reclaimed or stained wood are a great way to add a rustic element to your home. And, that’s especially true when you add in a darker color to a room full of light. All in all, this DIY project is simple enough and requires only a handful of materials including:

  • Plywood
  • Stain in your choice of hue
  • Painter’s tape
  • White paint
  • Christmas lights of your choice

Simply start by staining your piece of plywood. Once dry, you’ll use the painter’s tape to outline the shape of your holiday tree and use the white paint to fill it in. Again, once dry, you’ll want to drill holes at varying intervals along the outline of your white tree. Finally, you’ll finish this piece by inserting your lights through the holes so you can light it up and show it off.

2. Wood Block Christmas Tree

Wood-block Christmas trees are a great way to add a little whimsy to your indoor and outdoor spaces, depending on how big you want to go. For this project, all you’ll need is a piece of 2.2.8 (for a smaller piece) and some paint. Once you’ve cut your lumber into staggering sizes, you’ll want to paint them your color of choice. If you’re going to add some sayings or holiday wishes to your blocks, you can either stencil them on, paint them, or use vinyl, stick-on lettering.

3. Snowflake Wall Shelf

  • Nail gun
  • Glue
  • Miter saw
  • Clamps

4. Scrap Wood Stocking Hanger

Much like the wood-block Christmas tree or the light-up holiday tree marquee, the scrap-wood stocking hanger is another awesome, simple DIY decoration idea. For this one, you’ll simply nail or glue together a few scrap pieces of wood. Then, paint or stain them your desired color, and add a few hangers to the bottom. That way you can hang your Christmas stockings from it. Also, if you want to add some holiday phrasing, feel free to paint on your messaging or use stick-on vinyl lettering.

5. Beam Snowman

Another classic holiday DIY decoration idea is the beam snowman. What makes this idea awesome is that you aren’t limited to snowmen. In fact, you can turn these little guys into Santa or even his elves and reindeer. For this piece, you’ll need some 2×4 or other varying sized beams, paint, and a bit of fabric to create little hats or scarves for your snowmen.
